Placing unlinked pictures

I'm using Adobe CC2020.  When I go to place a picture in and unlink to embed it's coming up blank. When I link the same picture it's fine.  Whats going on.  I closed out and reopened my file sevearl times.

It would be helpful if you could share the problem picture and tell us a little more about your system and Illustrator version.

Also, what kind of picture?

Your screendumps do not make it clearer, you are using .eps files?

No they are jpg.  I've never had an issue with before.

If you create a new Illustrator file, do you have the same problem?
