PNG file is blocked for changes

Hey experts!

I've recently just downloaded illustrator and is very new to the program.

I've done some image vectoring from JPG -> PNG with transparent background and exported the image as PNG.

When i drag the saved PNG file into illustrator it's blocked for changes. I cant edit it. (I've attached a screenshot).

Theres a blue box with a mark in the middle that blocks any changes.. How do I unlock the image, so i can continue to edit the photo?

Looking forward for all your answers!

    Correct answer Test Screen Name

In the future - What format should i save my vector image in, to be able to edit it with no problems?

The trace turned it to vector but the PNG turned it back to raster. You threw away all your work an went back to your starting point. For vector, Save as AI in the usual way.

You might need a PNG as your final result but that's an extra thing you make. Keep the AI for editing (always two files).

Sorry we do not see the screenshot, so not sure if this is

    • an issue of a server holding onto the image
    • the time is locked individually or on a layer.
    • the item is a symbol or onehct than need you to object >> expand >> appearance

Can you try to post agin, you just need to click not the 8th icon in the tools above and choose  a bitmapped web format  screenshot (.jpg, .png. gif), and us. You should see a preview of you screenshot, prior to saving your reply.

    select item

    object >> expand

that will allow you to get to the vector paths, which is what I believe you are asking if I am understanding correctly..
