Wondered if anyone can help me: A client has asked me to produce artwork for an iPad or other tablet style device but I'm not sure what pixel dimensions to create it in or consider other factors that might apply. All help gartefully received.

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out. In addition to the suggestion shared by @marliton, I would advise you to confirm with the client if they need artwork for a specific tablet or iPad or a generic tablet resolution as there are different sizes, aspect ratios, and resolutions of iPad and tablets available in the market. For example: iPad 9 generation has 1620 x 2160 resolution, 4:3 aspect ratio whereas Samsung Tab 7 has 1600 x 2560 pixels, 16:10 ratio and iPad mini 6 generation has1488 x 2266 pixels, 3:2 aspect ratio. So, make sure you are designing artwork for the right resolution and aspect ratio. Once artwork is finished, it will be hard to resize it to a specific size as your artwork will not fit even you scale it. I hope it helps!

Appreciate the advice, Anshul. Funily enough I did check the tablet make and model (Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite Tablet 10.4) and based the pixel dimensions on that but I'm not so clear as to the aspect ratio. I assumed setting a resolution of 2000 x 1200px would be enough? Would it be possible for you to explain how, if an aspect ratio of 10.4" needs to be considered as well, an artwork should be set up in either InDesign or Illustrator for both aspect and resolution ie, 10.4" at 2000 x 1200px.

I'd really appreciate any guidance you can give me being an old graphic design guy more used to design for print.

Thanks

Michael

When you have a size in pixels it automatically gives the aspect ratio, by dividing one by the other. For example 2000 x 1000 pixels is 2:1 or 4:2 or many others, while 1500 x 1000 is 3:2.
