Problem direct selecting path Illustrator 29.7.1

Everything was working yesterday, now I am unable to select a path with the direct selection tool.  Everything is on the same layer, unlocked and ungrouped.

I read this has happened before in earlier editions.

I am unable to attach ai files directly here.  I hope this link works.

@Dilly_Dally Since the problem started suddenly, it's a strong possibility that you may have corrupted preferences are a very common cause of unexpected behavior in Illustrator. You can try a quick reset by holding down Control Alt Shift (Windows) or Command Option Shift (Mac) as you launch Illustrator. You will be asked if you want to reset your preferences.  If the quick method doesn't work, you can manually delete the preferences file. You will need to close Illustrator first. The location of the file depends on your operating system, so you may need to search online for the specific path for your OS.

Some users have reported strange interactions with modifier keys and the Direct Selection tool. It's possible your system is acting as if you're holding down the Ctrl or Cmd key, which can change how the Direct Selection tool works. Try tapping the key a few times to see if that resolves the issue. While other users have reported that the Direct Selection tool acts strangely when Snap to Grid or Snap to Point is active. Try turning these off from the View menu to see if it makes a difference.

I ended up completely uninstalling, reinstalling the program.  This at least got me set to ground zero again....
