Problems with Illustrators Direct Selection Tool

I've been having major problems with the Illustrators Direct Selection Tool.  I'm unable to edit specific parts of the dynamic symbol I've created using the direction selection tool.  Every time I try and select a portion of the symbol it automatically selects the whole symbol and does not allow me to edit &/or select individual portions of the symbol.  Please help.

So I think I worked it out (in my case at least). You can only edit from the swatches panel and NOT the properties window. If you select the component shape on your symbol it may not give you much indication that any part is selected. In my case the only indication was the dot marking the shape's centre point.

You then need to open the swatches panel and edit the colours or your object there (both stroke and fill). You can also use the Gradient, Color, Stroke or Transparency panels to edit the strokes and fills.

It's also worth noting that I did restart the software before getting this to work so that might be worth doing if the above doesn't work.

I am having the same issue. All the tutorials I have seen suggest that you can edit the stroke/fill properties of an instance of a Dynamic Symbol simply by selecting the shapes using the Direct Selection tool. Similarly I cannot select the individual components of my Dynamic Symbol Instances using the Direct Selection tool. If I use the Selection tool I select the whole Symbol as normal and can resize, rotate, etc. but if I use the Direct Selection nothing happens. Nothing is selected and nothing can be edited.

I have created a Dynamic Symbol (indicated by the + on the icon in the symbol library) and then dragged 3 instances of that symbol onto the artboard. My layers are all unlocked and each shows an instance of the symbol is present but none of them can be edited.

Any advice would be useful.

Without seeing something that would be rather difficult.

At least a screenshot. But the file would be even better.

Thanks Monika,

I seem to have figured it out now so hopefully my previous reply is useful to the original poster.

Please show.

Please show what exactly you click.

Are you sure, you're not accidentally using the group selection tool?

Maybe clicking Alt when selecting?

I tired clicking Alt when selecting the item and it still continues to select the whole symbol.

I'm sure I'm using Direct Selection Tool A.

Every time I click on the roof, or the windows, or the door of my house symbol with the direct select tool it always selects the whole house.

This is a symbol instace.

It would need to be a Dynamic symbol. Then you could select single elements in that symbol instance
