Properties panel stops showing property options for selected objects

Hopefully this makes sense.

 

When I'm using Illustrator, and (for example) click on a path, the properties panel updates to show specific options for that object - alignment, appearance, transform, quick actions.

 

The problem I am currently having is that after a while (seems random) this stops working and the properties panel doesn't update, it just shows the document options instead.

 

When the properties panel is behaving like this, if I click on "Edit Artboards", "Document Setup" or "Preferences" in the panel, none of those buttons do anything. They animate as if they've been clicked but nothing happens. Closing and re-opening the panel also doesn't work.

 

The only solution I have at the moment is closing and re-opening Illustrator, which fixes the issue temporarily.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's quite frustrating.

    We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. I hope the suggestions shared by Rene helped resolve the problem. If not, kindly try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS / Windows) and check if it helps.

      So I have tried that now, sorry for the late response.

      The properties panel now updates to show the correct options for the
      selected object, but it's taking about ten seconds to do so each time.

      Did you try to uninstall and reinstall Illustrator? What are your system specs?
