PSD to AI with editing capabilities

Community Beginner ,
Oct 13, 2023 Oct 13, 2023

I have a PSD saved and need to open it in Illustrator for printing reasons, and I want to have all layers and text editable in AI. Anytime I save the PSD with everything editable, I then go to open it in AI and it opens everything as a flat layer with text not editable DESPITE telling it to keep everything separate.

What do I do to fix this? I know it is possible, as I did it a few days ago, but I cannot for the life of me remember how to do so.

What settings are you choosing in the Photoshop Import Options dialog?

Hi @Effem,

Thanks for reaching out. To open a PSD file in Illustrator with editable layers and text, follow these steps:

  • In Adobe Photoshop:
    a. Open your PSD file in Adobe Photoshop.
    b. Ensure that your layers are ungrouped, and that text layers are editable.
    c. Save the PSD with all desired layers and text editable.

  • In Adobe Illustrator:
    a. Open Adobe Illustrator.
    b. Go to "File" > "Open" and select your PSD file.
    c. In the "Import Options" dialog box that appears, make sure to choose "Convert Layers to Objects" to keep your layers separate.
    d. Click "OK."

After opening the PSD with these settings, your layers and text should be preserved as separate and editable objects in Illustrator.

If you encounter issues where everything appears as a flat layer, and text isn't editable, make sure that you've correctly saved the PSD file with editable layers in Photoshop before opening it in Illustrator. You might also want to check the version compatibility between Photoshop and Illustrator to ensure that there are no conflicts.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully open and edit your PSD files in Adobe Illustrator with all layers and text intact. If you continue to experience problems, please provide more specific details about your workflow, such as the versions of Photoshop and Illustrator you're using, and share the PSD & I'll do my best to assist you further.

Best,

Anshul Saini

This does not work. All of those boxes are checked properly when I import into AI. Everything is exactly the same as you said, but nothing remains editable. There are many layers from PSD, nothing locked, no layer styles. When I import it turns all text into a flat rasterized version.

Do you have layers with transparency? It can force the layers to be flattened.

No, no layer has transparency, a Layer Style, or a blending mode.

Did you use layer blending modes in the PSD file?

No. Not a single layer has a blend mode or Layer Style.

Unable, as it is a file for my employment, in which I am under NDA.
