"check spelling" in wrong language

I'm trying to check spelling in polish language text, so I changed hyphenation. but AI is still trying to check it in english.what's wrong? I have illustator 5.5

You need to apply the language to the text itself using the character panel.

I don't have this option in character panel. probably because its 5.5 but maybe something is changed in preferences.

It's always been a part of the Character Panel.

If you don't see it, look in the panel menu and Show Options

You use now just a part of the Character panel. Click on the small "up-down" arrows next to the panel title (left of the header). Each click changes the panel appearance, ffrom just a header to the full-function form. Expand it fully, and you will see the language option.
