Right after launching Illustrator, I get the following error messages one after the other (ie, after clicking OK on the IABD one I get the next one). I was also getting this sometimes when turning visibility on selected layers on and off. These errors only resulted in a crash once, I normally click OK and then everything works OK, but I am worried about crashes. I am on an older iMac running Illustrator v.24.1.3

Ashutosh,
I am running MacOS Catalina 10.15.5
I am only working on one file nowadays (a file with a lot of layers), so, yes, it is happening with one file only. It sometimes happens when I first launch this file in Illustrator, and, more commonly, when I click the eye icon in the Layers panel to turn visibility of a layer on or off. It especially seems to throw these error messages when I click a series of eye icons quickly.
I dont mind resetting preferences. My workspace is not very customized. I will try that.
Peter

Thanks for providing the information. If it is happening with a specific file, then I'd recommend creating a fresh copy of the file. You may click on File > Save a Copy to do that. Try working on the new file and see if it helps.
You may also try placing this file on a new Illustrator document but that would require some edits. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Resetting preferences seemed to work. No more problems. Thanks

Dear @Arunachala ,
The trouble seems related to the appearance of dot and line gradients on .ai documents. I copied all those gradients and saved as pngs, then placed as linked files, and the trouble and error messages are gone. If you have a dot using 0% opacity, it might lead to this errors.

Also, you can review if you have linked files, as photoshop complex documents; too.

Hello @meganh87566960,
We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. Would you mind trying to manually reset Illustrator's preferences and checking if it helps:
For macOS
• Close all Adobe applications.
• Go to the following locations
• ~/Library/Caches
• ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
• ~/Library/Preferences
• Rename Adobe Illustrator, com.adobe.illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 28 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old, com.adobe.illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator 28 Settings.old
• Launch Illustrator from the Creative Cloud.
Note: Location starting with this "~" sign indicates the User Library, which is hidden. So, you need to copy & paste the exact path in spotlight search or from Finder Menu > Go > Go to Folder > Paste the location in the dialog box like this:
For Windows
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Go to Location C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
- Rename Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 28 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator - 28 Settings.old
- Relaunch Illustrator from Creative Cloud
Disclaimer: Please note that renaming preferences folders will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also save a backup of the folders in case you want to. The location is mentioned above.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav

Hi @meganh87566960,
Thank you for trying the steps provided by Anubhav. I'm sorry to hear that the issue persists despite all the troubleshooting.
To further assist you, could you please share some additional information:
Could you confirm the operating system you're using (e.g., macOS or Windows) and the version of Adobe Illustrator you have installed?
When you encounter errors, could you please provide more details about what happens? For example, what error messages do you see, and what actions trigger them? Additionally, what happens when you click "OK" on the error message?
Also, please share your system specs as well.
With this information, we'll be better equipped to troubleshoot the issue and provide you with a solution.
Looking forward to your response.
Best regards,

MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz, 32 GB Memory - Fast computer that shows absolutely NO lag or issues with any of the other Adobe applications. Illustrator is un-usable. It lags terrible. Throws errors and crashes. I have un-installed ALL Adobe applications, run the cleaner, cleared all preference. Did not fix it. All issues started with the 28 Illustrator Update. Version 27 worked fine.
Mac Sonoma 14.3
Illustrator 28.3
Currently Illustrator runs crazy slow, constant spinning wheel and lost of crashes. I can do just about anything and get a spinning wheel. Just zooming out will do it.
I also have a specific issue when I move, copy or paste artwork that was created in an older version of Illustrator (like from 2 months ago, not a super old) it throws the 2 errors shown at the top of this thread. I hit ok and it does not paste. I try again, hit ok and it finally pastes or moves it. Eventually is crashes. The same elements that create the error do not appear if I save as a PDF.
Basically, I cannot work.

Thank you for providing detailed information, @meganh87566960. It sounds like you're encountering significant performance issues and errors, which is understandably frustrating, especially considering the smooth performance of other Adobe applications on your MacBook Pro.
Based on the information you've provided, it seems that Illustrator is exhibiting slow performance, constant spinning wheels, crashes, and specific errors when working with artwork from older versions of Illustrator. Additionally, you mentioned that you've already tried various troubleshooting steps, including uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe applications, running the cleaner tool, and clearing preferences, but the issues persist.
To further troubleshoot the performance and error issues, could you please provide the following additional information:
With this additional information, we'll be better equipped to diagnose and address the issues you're experiencing with Illustrator.
Looking forward to your response.

1. Are you using any window management tools like BetterSnapTool, Magnet, or similar applications? NO
2. Where are your saved files located? Are they stored on a network drive, your system's HDD, a shared folder, or an external HDD/ SSD? Stored to HDD
3. Can you share a sample file from where you copy and paste content into Illustrator and encounter the error? It seems there might be a corrupted layer element or object causing the issue. See attached.
4. Could you please confirm the exact model of your MacBook Pro?
MacBook Pro 15” 2018
2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9
Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
32GB 3400 MHz DDR4

Thank you for providing the additional information, @meganh87566960. Based on your response:
It's good to know that you're not using any window management tools like BetterSnapTool or Magnet, as these could sometimes interfere with Illustrator's performance.
Since your files are stored on your system's HDD, it's worth confirming if the HDD is connected via USB or if it's the internal HDD of your MacBook Pro.
Regarding the sample file, attaching files directly to the community platform is not supported. Could you please upload the file to a cloud storage service like Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar, and share the link to the file here? This will allow us to access the file and investigate the issue further.
Thank you for confirming the model of your MacBook Pro. The detailed specs you provided will be helpful in diagnosing the performance issues you're experiencing with Illustrator.
Once we have access to the sample file and clarify the HDD connection, we'll be able to proceed with troubleshooting the specific errors you're encountering.
Looking forward to your response.

Thank you for sharing the file, @meganh87566960. I've examined the Illustrator file you provided, and it appears that there were indeed a couple of paths causing the error. These corrupted paths can sometimes lead to performance issues and errors in Illustrator.
To resolve this issue, I've cleaned up the file by deleting the problematic paths. Here's a screenshot showing how to identify and delete these corrupted paths:
After cleaning up the file, it should work without any errors. Please let me know if you encounter any further issues or if there's anything else I can assist you with.
