Remove white background from AI created image

The attached image was created in Firefly.  I removed the background in Photoshop using the 'Remove Background' buttton in the context tool bar.

I am trying to vectorise the image retaining the transparent background.  When I do an image trace in Illustrator it vectorises without any problems with a very good result with the '16 colors' setting.

However I seem to now have a white background in the .ai file which I'm having trouble removing.  Any suggestions please?
