Removing background from vector

Hi, I'm trying to remove the white background from a vector texture image, and to leave only the texture part. Essentially i want to be able to change the background to different colors and to have that same texture effect.

I've been trying to do this for over an hour, and I'm sure it's something simple that I'm overlooking.

Can someone please walk me through how to do it. The image can be found here Grey linen texture background Vector | Free Download , wasn't sure how to attached it to this post.

With that file go to the layers panel.

Open all the layers, groups and whatnot.

Find the item called "clipping path"

Target it (click on the circle)

Open the gradient panel

put the fill in focus

Edit the gradient

This doesn't look at all like a vector graphic, more like a simple crosshatch pixel filter. IUf that's the case, then Photoshop would be the place to go to.
