Removing the transparent checkerboard pattern from a purchased stock image. Ideally it should be a layer, although it has hundreds of checkerboard layers and I tried to delete them without success. The image is a snow globe and I want to place another image behind the snow globe with flares as if they were in the snow globe. I purchased from Shutterstock and they just said they will credit the image cost, which does not fix this issue.

I am using CS5. When downloading from Shutterstock it automatically downloads a PDF. I will try changing it to EPS and see what happens.
That won't help you.
When opening that PDF do you get any warning messages?

Oh gosh Monika, it was the EPS vs PDF download conversion. What a headache this has cause, I am so thankful to everyone assisting.
When i re-downloaded from Shutterstock, and this time I did not allow it to auto download to a PDF. It works now with the background in its single layer. Couldn't believe Shutterstock does not know this!
THANK EVERYONE AGAIN AND AGAIN!

So your browser did this?
Oh wow. Shutterstock should indeed include that in their FAQ.

Wow! No wonder you weren't able to use the method I mentioned. The PDF file is poop! Glad you're able to get the EPS file to work for you.
