resizing text to a small point size cause spikes on "M" and "N" characters

I have some text that I resized to a very small point size (3pt). However, upon doing so, I noticed spikes appearing on the "M" and "N" characters. What is casuing this and how to fix it? I need the very small point sizes, so resizing it to a larger point is not an option.

I have attached a scren shot showing the problem.

THere is something applied to the layer. Possibly a stroke

Can you create a new layer and then put the text on that new layer?

Did you apply a stroke to it?

No. I did not apply a stroke.

Is it still live type or converted to outlines? Are these variable fonts?

I ahve not converted it to outlins. The font is 3ds extralight. I do not kknow if it is a varible font, however, this happens with other fonts as well, soI don't think it is a problem with a specific font.

Does it happen with Adobe Fonts?

If so, please set up a file that contains an Adobe font doing this and share the AI file.

If you change the file extension to PDF you can upload the file to this forum.
