retaining stroke width when scaling up

Hi

Illustrator newbie here - (so apologies for my in experience....)

I am using a font to generate symbols for a diagram. I want to scale up some of the symbols, but keep the stroke lines the same width. I've converted the individual character to an object by 'create outines' and have it stored as a symbol. I have 'scale stroke and effects' unchecked in preferences. But when I select the symbol and scale it up the strokes are scaling up too.

What am I missing??

Thank you for any suggestions.

Correct answer Monika Gause

Fonts don't convert to single lines, but all your shapes are outlined. You can't keep their lines the same width.

Only thing you could try, is using Object > Path > Offset path after scaling to make the thinner.

i'm afraid symbols are rather immutable in that way. their strokes will always scale with them unless you break the link.

OK - so whilst I've just lost 5 hours of my life looking for the answer at least I know I'm not missing something...
