Retype - 'Apply' button has disappeared

Community Beginner ,
Feb 18, 2025 Feb 18, 2025

I think a few others are having this issue, but I'm yet to see any response and/or fix from Adobe.

Retype has successfully identified the font in an image, but there is no 'apply' button (only an exit button) so no way to convert into editable text.  Retype add-ons are already activated in CC App.

Anyone found a solution ?

As I understand it the functionality has been removed. Retype is simply a font matching panel now.

We've made these changes to the Retype feature based on community feedback. We're focusing Retype solely on font matching, which is what most of you use it for.

The text editing functionality wasn't meeting professional standards and created confusion about the tool's purpose. Many of you expressed lack of confidence in these editing workflows during our community interaction sessions.

You'll still be able to detect fonts and apply them to new text - this core functionality remains unchanged.

Why would that be removed? It only offers matches to fonts from a user's library, so wouldn't violate any licences. Even just an OCR function to an editable font would be very useful.

Good news: We're developing a dedicated "Un-outline" feature specifically for converting outlined text back to editable text. This will provide a more reliable solution for vector text restoration.

Our goal is to create clearer, more focused tools you can trust in your professional workflows. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve these features. Hope this helps!

I guess a renaming is in order then, which I would have expected upon removal of the key feature, and maybe a more public explanation so we're not left wondering what's wrong with our computers and install, no?

That was by far the most useful part of the retype tool. It helped so much with workflow and saving time. I really hope I can download the previous versions and still use this feature.

Hi and thanks for let's know that the retype is not working, when we can expect the  "Un-outline" to editable text?

I would love the re-type tool to be re-activated. I am making a simple text change to expanded logos, and now I will have to try and line up the text perfectly instead of just typing with the re-type tool. Which I can do, it just makes the logo process I am working on a lot more time consuming. Please bring re-type back.

It was by far the most useful part of Retype to me. Community feedback shouldn't have such one-sided results. Make it an option. Nobody had to use 'apply'. I can't imagine how many features I use that are subject to the whims of others? Honestly it's what I really hate about subscription programs. Programs I buy and own outright remain solid and consistant. I don't have to worry about losing features I use heavily. It's not a good look for Adobe. Having to change how I work on clients projects. These things are a concern. Not just retype but as a whole. When I can not depend on a program to remain consistant for workflow when time-saving features just disappear, that's a problem. Now everyone who used Retype "apply" has several extra steps. Retype has less value as a time-saver. I am going to look into rolling back the update. Identify-apply, identify-apply is way more convienant than finding all the fonts and having to exit Retype, then remember the font names and correct spelling. Creating a text area. Re-sizing. Positioning. Looking up the font. Giant steps backwards Adobe.

Thanks for the update, and the transparency in sharing this info. That said, I do want to add my voice to those who found the text editing functionality genuinely useful. In my experience, it worked flawlessly and was a huge time-saver in my workflow. I completely understand the need to clarify the tool’s purpose, but I’d love to see that editing capability reinstated in the near future.

Literally the worst company. How about you disable the feature after you create the thing meant to replace it, instead of before hand?

I hope Adobe Illustrator will reinstate the retype function in the next update. This feature was incredibly powerful and significantly boosted my work efficiency. Without it, my productivity has decreased considerably, which may cause inconvenience for many users. Regardless of the reason for its removal, I sincerely hope the development team can find a better solution soon so that more users can enhance their efficiency.

I think the issue is licensing, theres no way the community would want an easy feature removed... lol don't lie to us.

The answers indicate it was removed due occasional inaccuracies, but that's par for the course in OCR systems. It would still be quite useful with the caveat that it required proof reading. I'd like to see it restored.
