Correct me if I am wrong :
When I first tried Retype feature I could edit text in an image (incorporated, not linked).
But now I am only able to identify a more or less simliar font without editing text function.
Am I missing something or did Adobe stepped back and dropped this very useful feature?
Hi Didier Mazier,
You’re right—the editing functionality has been removed from Retype. The tool now focuses solely on helping you identify hard-to-find fonts in images.
With Retype, you can easily identify fonts used in static text or outlined text from raster images. Once you spot a font you like, take a photo of it, import it into Illustrator, and let Retype search through over 30,000 Adobe Fonts and your local font library to find the closest match.
Hope that clears things up! Let me kn

Are there any plans to reimplement the Edit function? It was incredibly useful.

Hi
Thank you for this clarification about editing tool.
Without this great tool Retype is way less useful.
There are 2 questions remaining :
Why the editing functionality was removed?
Is the editing functionality planned to be implanted again?
Thanks
D.

This completely makes Adobe Illustrator Classroom in A Book 2025 useless. If the editing was removed, then many students like me will not understand how to finish certian assignments. The editing mode should be reiplimented.

That doesnt work becasue the asignment it to delete an S from a word that is already part of an image, you cant just retype it becasue you cant even select it without that functionality

It bothers me a lot that is was removed. These days, I use Chat GPT, Gemini, Meta or other AIs to transcribe. I'm guessing it never really worked and it was too buggy. I must've sent tenths of reports, when my PC crashed, trying to use the Retype tool. I really hope they bring it back and improoved.

I could just use it in version 2024.
You can still install that version via the Creative Cloud.
The trouble is that Retype needs to be downloaded additionally once you open it for the first time. And that could be a problem. You need to try it. If you can get it to work, make sure to not uninstall it.

Then, rename it to Font Identify instead of a name that suggests it can RETYPE text for you.

The retype tool, in its beta form (i.e., where you could edit vectorized text), was a better and more useful tool than what is currently available. Please fix it! Putting it in Photoshop is cool, but I think graphic designers who use Illustrator would appreciate and use this tool more.

I agree. I thought my installation was broken or something. What's weird is that I can still sometimes edit text with the Retype tool. It's just not consistent, and I haven't noticed a pattern for when I can and cannot use it for editing.

What a shame, it was the only use I saw for Retype. They called it Re-Type for a reason, didn't they?
