I have a problem with the stroke / outline in Illustrator. I came up with a design I liked in Indesign, but wanted to rebuild it for later use in Illustrator. Using the same stroke settings as in InDesign, the Illustrator-version cuts into another, making it impossible to get the same smooth, connected letters that I had in Indesign. Even when converting the font to paths. Google suggested that I needed to bring the stroke to the back and the fill to the front, but that does not fix it. How do I get the same stroke effect from InDesign in Illustrator?
The appearance panel does not show at all what I described in my post.

Delete the stroke from the text
Group both your text objects. If it's just one text object, no group is needed
Apply a new stroke to the group in the Appearance panel
Move it below the "Contents"
Apply the color and stroke weight
If there is just one text object.
Select that with the selection tool
Apply a new stroke to the text object
Move it below the Characters in the appearance panel

Here you go. Its all in one layer. I added a screenshot from Indesign, which is the look I try to achieve. In the indesign version it’s like there is a stroke/outline around the entire word. In Illustrator the stroke is just applied to each individual letter. Like I said, the option to just set the stroke to the background does not solve the problem. Any help is appreciated.
