I am wanting to save an illustrator file so that I can upload it to a website (currently saving as a .png) and then download and edit later in ai. Any suggestions?? When I download now, it is just a .png file and I cannot edit.

For editing you need to save an AI file.

For uploading to the web you need to save some other format (like PNG).

Thanks Monika. The site that I have to upload to is not compatible with ai files yet. So I don't know if I am trying to do an impossible thing. I am uploading a PNG, but can't edit. Any ideas?

THen you will either need to choose a different site or rethink your editing concept.

Hi Elliet,

Have you tried an EPS file? That is a vector file that will allow you to expand the AI layers of the vector later. Let me know if that helps.

Best,

Megan

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

If it's CC you can save your .ai files in your CC files folder and share them with others or edit them on another machine.

Your post sounds like you'd still have access to the original .ai file because you are uploading a .png bitmap file, which is a copy in itself.  So, not sure why you wouldn't be able to edit in the future?

A PNG is not an editable file. In Photoshop you could manipulate it, but it is not vector like AI or EPS.

•If you are trying to send someone a sample of the image, just upload the PNG, and when they make the notes, edit it on your AI file.

•If you are trying to send the AI file to someone via FTP for them to look at and then send back, send it through www.wetransfer.com Its free and accepts AI files.

•If you are moving from lets say a school computer with AI and want to have access to the file on another computer with AI, you can either A) email the file to yourself. AI files are typically small B) Put it on a flash drive and carry it with you. Designers will agree that we all have about 50 thousand USB drives at home, at work, in our pockets and backpacks lol for this reason lol.
