Fun in 29.7.1: "The document "" is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete"

Community Beginner ,
Aug 19, 2025 Aug 19, 2025

Since updating Illustrator to 29.7.1, I've run upon several issues that are affecting productivity, but the two that are the biggest losers are the randomly-appearing-on-save "The document "" is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete" issue and the Preferences > Keyboard Increment change.

nosavenohappy.png

This random save issue is probably the Gold Medal Winner winner of the Frustration Olympics from my angle as when it pops up, the only way I can get around it is to set Paste Remembers Layers, copy all the elements I'm working with to a new document, check that all colors, layters, etc are correct, save it as a new working file, close/reopen the app then delete the original file so I don't get it mixed up with the new one. This is, as they say, no bueno por caca. Oh, and not to mention the poor grammar of "getting saved."

Runnerup is a lil guy who doesn't seem like much of a contender, but he packs a punch... After years of the preferences window defaulting to Preferences > Keyboard Increment being active upon opening (thus my being used to hitting Ctrl+K, entering a value for the keyboard increment and tapping <return> without really looking,) in 29.7.1, it now defaults to the Search Parameters field being active. So now it's Ctrl+K, 4x tab, enter value and hit return 2x. I realize this is not a dealbreaker but more of a "dammit, Adobe, don't fix it if it ain't broke" annoyance.

prefdefault.jpg

This update is also chock full of surprises like weird redraw issues, commands not completing or even recognizing being called and other oddball save issues that I've only seen randomly a couple of times, therefore not documentable (yet). Anyone else?

Hello everyone,

Our product team has tried fixing this with the latest Illustrator (beta) release. Would you mind installing Illustrator (beta) and letting us know if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Zubair5C97 and everyone,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Could you let me know if this happens with all files or only certain ones, and whether you're saving them locally, to an external drive, or to a cloud-synced folder like Google Drive or Dropbox? It would also help if you could confirm your OS version along with the Illustrator version. In the meantime, please try saving the file to a different location and see if the issue continues. You can also try turning off the 'Save in Background' option in Illustrator's file handling preferences to check if that makes a difference.

Looking forward to your update.
Abhishek

Happening to all files - locally, I don't save items to the cloud. Software versions are in the original reply

Hi Abhishek,

The issue is intermittent — it happens with some files but not others. I haven’t noticed a specific pattern, though the affected files were larger (around 500MB).

I’m saving files both locally and on a server while connected through a VPN (using the MacOS built-in VPN tool).

My setup:

  • MacOS Sequoia Version 15.6 (24G84)

  • Adobe Illustrator CC Version 29.7.1
  • Apple M2 Pro

  • 16GB RAM

  • 811GB free space

Hope this helps narrow it down.

Thanks,

Hi @Zubair5C97 & @matthew_gallagher,

Thanks for the update. Could you please try restarting your Mac in Safe Mode following the steps here: https://adobe.ly/4mxb5GM. While in Safe Mode, avoid connecting to VPN and try saving the file locally. It would be very helpful if you could also test this with a large file and let me know if the issue still occurs.

Looking forward to your update.

Best,
Abhishek

Still happening. This is a blocking issue for your software. If I cannot save work, then your company's software no longer has any value to me or my business. This occurred after the latest update, so thinking that it is the operating system and expecting safe mode to correct this issue is not looking at the core problem - your company's latest release.

What did you try?

- Safe Mode?

- turning off "Save in background"?

- saving the file on the local harddisk?

Did you already try and reset the preferences?

I tried what was suggested by the Adobe employee and the software still does not function correctly after its most recent update.

Hello @matthew_gallagher,

I'm sorry to hear you're still having trouble with this. Would you mind running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) and checking if it helps?
Also, try re-enabling Full Disk Access for Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/4lNj15E) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

This is not a Mac issue nor my personal account on the operating system issue. This is a purely Adobe created issue and your investigation should be focused on the failure of your company's build and release of the latest version. No other application has issues nor no major Mac OS system upgrades have been installed - the only thing that changed on my system was the upgrade of Illustrator - which broke itself.

Tengo exactamente el mismo problema, pero en Windows, ya probe todas las soluciones y confirmo que es problema del software (inicio con la última actualziación). Lancen un parche para solucinar el error porque perjudica mucho el trabajo que realizamos.

On my end, I've found that turning the 'Save in background' feature has helped. I haven't experienced the issue thus far, though I haven't tried saving a file while connected to a server.

This is the same thing that is happening to me everytime I open a file in the latest version of Illustrator regardless of file size - although many of my files are 200MB+. A dialog box appears when I select "save" and states, "currently saving" with two boxes, one to cancel and the other to continue the save, but it just keep saying that.  I can't do a "save as" either or even "quit" Illustrator on the pull down menu. I have to force quit Illustrator and then when I reopen Illustrator the "recovered" file has all of my recent changes. I just keep working that way, but it is scary. I always save to my desktop. I am going to revert back to the last version of Illustrator to avoid the this problem.

Also, I am having issues with my text tool - again. If I double-click quickly on a text box, Illustrator will suddenly crash. This happened a few years ago too, but I had been fixed.

Is someone from Adobe troubleshooting this for an update?

Thank you for your help!

This just happened to me too.

My first file is quite large (18.9MB) so I saved this file, waited, and opened a new file (3MB) to make revisions on.  Despite giving the first file a good amount of time to save (revising the other file, meeting, snack break) the first file did not complete saving and would not stop after clicking the "stop saving" button. I couldn't save my second smaller file either since Illustrator was still working on saving the first bigger file and attempting to close the second smaller file would still prompt the dialog box to cancel/close without saving/save but would not indicate that it was saving; I tried closing this file 2-3 times and each time close/saving dialog box would pop up.

Ultimately, I gave up and force quit Illustrator hoping that AutoRecovery would work since that has had issues with not saving or making an executable recovery file. The first bigger file was able to be recovered completely and, strangely enough, the second smaller file saved on the original file even though it didn't show it had saved.

Currently running the latest versions of Illustrator and MacOS - 29.7.1 and Sequoia 15.6.1 respectively.

I am having the same issue. Saving locally, Sequoia 15.6, running Illustrator 29.7.1. Happening with multiple files at random occurences / rates. Plenty of disk space available for the files.

Can't save at all - I get the error "The document'' is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete.

Stop Save | OK. "Stop Save" does not stop the current save.

I can't Save as, Save a copy, Save a template...nothing - all save options give the same error. The only option I have is to force quit and hope I didn't lose too much work with the auto-recovery.

Have started having these issues all of a sudden and it's causing me to lose work because it's not actually saving, at all and I need to force close the app as it won't close while "saving".
I know Adibe will saying it's because of a third party app, or "the cloud" but this have never happened before whatever the most recent update was.
Maybe focus on useful features and functions that designers need rather than features that make anyone a designer.

Does it work when you turn off "Save in background" in the Illustrator preferences?

I am having the same issue. In addition to getting "stuck" saving. Even when it successfully saves, it instantly has unsaved changes. The only way out of the former is a force quit, and the later a "save as." I even deleted my preferences and started from scratch to see if it would fix it. (Did not.)

I did. And while it reduces the frequency of the save error, it does not eliminate it entirely.

Hello @katherineboroski,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Could you confirm the version of Illustrator and the OS installed, and if this happens with all files or files in a particular folder location, so we can better assist you?

Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am also having this issue the last few weeks, along with some other weird bugs, like Illustrator randomly changing my fonts after I've saved, closed and re-opened a file.  I'm also getting hounded constantly about being signed in to too many devices, when in fact I only ever work in Illustrator on two machines (and never at the same time since I only have two hands). I wish Adobe would commit as much dedication to ensuring their primary software works properly as they do to all of their fancy new AI functions, especially considering the recent subscription price increase. 😒

In any event, if anyone can offer a solve for this particular issue of getting stuck in saving mode, please share! I am on a Mac running Sequoia 15.6.1 and Illustrator version 29.7.1. I think I will drop back to an earlier version in the meantime and see if that resolves these problems until Adobe figures out what they're doing.

Yeah, experienced the same issue with the pop-up notification about being signed in to too many devices at once. Hope that gets solved soon. As for the 'stuck in saving mode issue', I've found that turning off the 'Save in background' feature helped. I've rarely experienced the issue since then.
