a while back a Bunch of settings in Ai6 got messed up for me and I just can’t seem to fix them. If I try to scale an object and keep the proportions to scale and keep the object centered, it won’t stay proportioned. I can scale it and keep the proportions set or scale it from the center point but not both. Also if I duplicate an object and hold shift when doing it to move it perpendicular or verrocke, it will just move the object and not copy it. Any ideas? I’ve just been working around it for a while but it’s making this significantly harder

In both cases, are you holding down the shift and alt/opt keys?

Yes. I hold alt to scale from the center it works. If I hold shift to scale proportionately it works. But if I hold both it doesn’t.
when it comes to duplicating if I hold shift while duplicating to move it on the X or Y axis, it won’t copy the object. Just move it.
It was fine for years. And then it just stopped working right. I use the same 5 tool in Ai and don’t mess with settings. No idea how it got this way.

What tool do you use? If you have the Selection Tool and try to scale using the Bounding box, you cannot make a copy using the Alt key.
Moving with theSelection Tool and the Alt key should make a copy.
If yoy want to scale proportionally from the center and make a copy, use the Scale tool and press Alt and Shift.

Can you rule out hardware issues? Try a different keyboard/mouse.
Which system ist it?
When was your last computer restart?
Did this ever work?

I don’t have another keyboard option. i can rule out the track pad being the issue because it happens both with my track pad and with my Wacom cintiq. It’s a 24HD if that’s at all helpful.

Please try a mouse.
Wacoms are sometimes erratic as well.

I have a track pad. Same issue with that. I’ve updated the Wacom driver. Either way I work entirely on the Wacom. It’s a neucanse to switch between the Wacom pen for draw and a mouse or some other device to scale. There has to be a fix.

we need to have a clue as to which part of your system is causing the issue. is it the hardware? the system? the drivers? or Illustrator. So please tell us if it works with a mouse.

yes using the selection tool.
It has to be a software issue if the issue persists with both my trackpad and my cintiq, right? Drivers are all updated.

Use the Scale tool (S)

Hi there,
Greetings from Adobe!
We are very sorry that you ran into this issue. As per your query, when you scale image by pressing "ALT" it scales from the center and with "Shift", it scales proportionally, but whenever you scale by pressing "Shift" and "ALT" it does not work properly. If yes, as mentioned by Monika, we need to know where exactly is the fault. If you have already tried with a different keyboard, I would suggest you to please try resetting preferences for Illustrator How to set preferences in Illustrator.
Regards,
Srishti

I know it's been 5 years but since I just had this problem and this post showed up while I was looking for a solution I'm writing this for future travels: I accidentally turned off bounding boxes (cmd+shift+b) while trying to past in place (cmd+shift+v). I went to View and clicked Show Bounding Boxes and everything went back to normal.
