Hello!
I cannot write letters like ä or ö with Illustrator. This seems to be a very common problem (and newer occurs in Corel Draw, by the way). I´m studying and have to use Adobe programs and also pay for it. Cannot find answwers anywhere in the net. I have understood that this problem appears only with Windows? And for some reason in my Computer it doesn't exist all the time, however most of the time. (The same problem with libraries, they are out of use often). Can somebody please help me. This ä.ö problem is very irritating. Could you write an answer to FAQ also?
PS Otherwise Adobe Programs are very good and the tutorials for beginner excellent!

Could it be that the font you're using does not include those letters?
Is the NUM LOCK key is not on?
You should be able to get those characters in one of two ways:
Windows: Alt+0229 Mac: Option+A = å
Windows: Alt+0246 Mac: Option+u, then o = ö
Or you can use the Glyphs panel. Click your type tool in the text where you want the glyph and double click the glyph inside the Glyphs panel.

Hi,
Thank you for your advice. It is not the font problem. Occurs without any
reason every now and then. Luckily today after closing and re-opening the
Illustrator succeeded to finish one job today. I will try the other
suggestions you have made also. Thank you!

Since it is intermittent, it may your keyboard, although since it works in Corel, that may not be the case.
Another possibility is that the Illustrator preferences file may have gotten corrupt. How to set preferences in Illustrator
