Question

Seamless pattern document setting

Hi there,

I would like to create a seamless pattern document to apply on apparel and fabrics and wall paper.

Right now, I am watching some videos explaining how to do it, and the tutorial suggest to set up the document in pixels (2000x1000 pixels at 300DPI) to create a half drop pattern.

The thing is that I don't really like to use such a small resolution as the pixels got really visible.

So I was wondering:

           1) if I set up the canvas with the suggested pixels dimensions, can I later change the dimensions for a higher level of pixels when I export (imagine if a client changes his mind and ask for higher dimensions)?

          2) And if I use some pixels textures, what is the consequences if I change the resolution later?

Many thanks for your help!

That is the beauty of vector graphics that you can later change it.

But: when printing on fabric what is limiting you is the fabric itself. So you have to watch out because of your details. Do not make them too tiny or you won't notice them after printing.

But also after scaling you will have to watch out that the repeat still works.

@Monika Gause Thank you very much for you quick reply. It is good to know and duly noted.

I have another question on the same topic. Note that I am new in AI and right now I am watching a tutorial to make pattern.

>> The pattern I want to make represents 3 swimmers. I set up my first canvas 100x100cm to draw them with vectors.

>> The second new document I created to turn these swimmer into pattern is 2000x1000pixels.

>> I copied and pasted each swimmer into the canvas I created for half drop pattern. Then, all my artwork strokes got thicker and inaccurate, as you can see in the screenshot.

So I guess I cannot directly copy and paste the element vector based into the canvas pixels based?

Do I have to rasterise the swimmer first and then copy/paste into the canvas for pattern?

Many thanks again 🙂
