Selection tool is a blue box (about 3" x .5") and when I move the mouse, the box moves about a

I can't click and drag with the selection tool. If I try to click and drag it selected objects with multiple blue boxes that are all the same size and the boxes are aligned in a grid pattern.

You ought to be able to identify, and lock/hide them, with the help of the expanded Layer in the Layers panel.

 

You can also show us a screenshot of the Layer.
