Separating a file into different layers in Illustrator

Hello, I have a .jpg file open in Illustrator and I am not able to expand it to look at different layers. What I want to do is move certain parts of the image backwards and bring others forward, but I am not able to do so. The "Object > Expand" function is greyed out. Is there another way for me to break this image down into all of its different parts?

Thank you

You would need to vectorize it.

That can be done manually or automatically. Depending on the nature of the artwork one or the other would be more suitable.

Inside Photoshop you could leave it as raster and select parts to move them on their own layer.

A jpeg file is an image. Illustrator is a vector editing application.

Although it could be possible to use multiple copies of the image with multiple masks to isolate elements, Photoshop as an image editor would be the right tool.

Interesting, thank you for that. I was thinking of using the Image Trace function, but I lost some of the fine details when I did so.

A JPG is just one layer.

Besides it is a raster image. Most of Illustrator's functionality is aimed at vector artwork.

Thanks for your response! Is there a way to convert the file into a format with more layers?
