Set English: UK as default for all new Illustrator documents March 2019

Hi there, I'm trying to find a way of ensuring all new documents we create have English: UK set as the default language.

It's set as English: UK in Preferences, yet each new document I create defaults to English: USA and needs to be corrected.

All the help pages I've found so far are solutions from a few years ago and I can't follow the steps described as I don't have the same options.

Can someone point me in the right direction for how to set English: UK as the default language in 2019 so every document I create is correct from the start?

Many thanks in advance.

Are you sure that you are using that Document profile?

I'm asking because the document profiles have been obscured so much in the new "New document" dialog boxes

Can you try and set this up in an AI template file? Maybe it works better.

There are system preferences, but I think that just applies to menus, dialogs, etc.; also keyboard prefs. Adobe Illustrator Preferences has a language setting in the Hyphenation pane, and there's a language setting at the very bottom of the Character panel. I think those are the options I'm aware of.

Hi Peter, I'm aware of all of those setting which I switch to english: UK. When I open a new document the character panel still defaults to english: USA though, and it's the new documents I want to open as English: UK by default.

You need to change that in the default character style in your New Document Profile or the template file you use.

Hi Monika, apologies, I can't find the 'New Document Profile' option, could you direct me there? I'm using a PC, perhaps that's why.

It's hidden away perfectly. You first need to save just an AI file with all the settings you want to have.

May « 2009 « Adobe Illustrator blog

Then move this into the Illustrator folder in your Application Support in your user folder. Inside the Illustrator folder there is a folder called "New document profiles"

Hi Monika, thanks for all your help so far.

I'm still struggling however and wondering if it's because I'm using CC not an older version of Illustrator as the path to find the correct folder doesn't work for me. I've attached a picture of what I can see in my system window:

No Application Data folder.JPG

I have found where to save a New Document Profile (see below). But when I create a new document, set all preferences and save it into this folder and open it from the Illustrator homescreen it defaults back to English: USA in the character pallet.

New Document Profiles USA.JPG

I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but for a business that never uses English: USA it would be amazing if I could easily default to English: UK by just pressing a button!

Thanks for your time : )

Have you set the language in the document's default character style? The language in the preferences is not relevant for this.

Yes, I have set it in the Character Window and the Character Styles options Panel under Advanced Character Formats - it's called [Normal Character Style] not default though.

I also changed the language in the [Normal Paragraph Styles] yet it still reverts to USA when I reopen the template file or create a new document using the UK option I created.

My system and software are all up-to-date so I'm baffled by this!

I really appreciate your help Monika, I'll try and engage an IT support service to see if there's anything they can suggest.

Many thanks

You're welcome.

If you use this template via the "New from template" dialog, you don't need to save it in the New document profiles folder. You can save it anywhere you like and it will be easier to access.
