In limited testing I find I can save a 2022 file in .ai format and open it in AI 2020. But an AI 2022 PDF will not in 2020 fully intact even with "Save with AI Compatibility" chosen.
Is there a simple way to allow PDF files to be cross-compatible between the two versions as are AI files?
FYI… we are using Illustrator in a production environment that requires NO high-end features. The files are very basic grouped vectors.
It turns out if I save an .ai file in AI 2022 (with "Create PDF Compatible File" checked) then change the suffix to .pdf the file will open with full editability in AI 2020, complete with preview.

I guess you'd better post that to Uservoice http://illustrator.uservoice.com
What an interesting issue.

Yes.
But you don't get to set the PDF options.
The suffix just exists for the operating system.

In my case that is not important. The file is completely vector anyway. I would rather have the saved PDF be compatible with 2020, but I can have a macro change the file name in the Finder automatically to automate workflow.
I work in a production environment and AI 2022 cannot be installed on some older computers. It is important for PDF files to be compatible with both AI 2020 and 2022.
