Shortcut to toggle hide artwork outside of artboard?

Is there a shortcut to toggle hiding/showing artwork outside of artboard? 

I often have artwork extending outside the artboard and need to view a "preview" of the final piece from time to time.  A sort of workaround I've been using is a clipping mask but that's clunky.

You're looking for a Preview mode like we have in Adobe InDesign. Unfortunately no we don't have that ability in Illustrator at this point in time.

I open the navagator and drag it out to fill the screen, then toggle that on and off

A google search tells me people have been asking about this for years, only to receive a myriad of suggested workarounds.

Seems like such an easy feature to add - Adobe can we get this added or at least comment as to why not?

Here's another clunky suggestion for you.

What I do is draw a gray rectangle that extends outside the artboard, a smaller rectangle inside that is the same size as the artboard. Then subtract the artboard-sized rectangle from the larger one, basically making a gray frame around the artboard. That frame can be on a separate layer, and the visibility toggled on/off.

If you want to use the frame for multiple files, you can save it as a symbol and drag it out of the Symbols panel any time you need it.

It's unfortunate that we all must get so creative, as the demand is clearly there for such a preview.

Another common workaround is to create a rectangular layer clipping path with the same size as the artboard. This clipping path can be shown or hidden in the Layers palette.

If you are working with multiple layers, you would first have to move them into a single master layer (so that they become sublayers), then create the layer clipping path for the master layer.

As it's apparent you already knew the answer is no.

To be honest there's lots of things I'd rather Adobe spent their time on, rather than this-

for example a dedicated Undo/Redo button

There are a lot of things I don't know how to do.  It was a legitimate question - I thought perhaps I'd seen one before but apparently not.

In Illustrator CC 2018, you can hide everything outside the art board by going to View–Screen Mode–Preview or View–Screen Mode–Presentation (Sft-W).
