Shortcuts and arrow keys not working

Im having a problem with shortcuts and arrow keys in adobe illustrator. They stop working all together while im in the program.  Also when I try to open a new file in illustrator I click on the file and all it does is go back to the same file i was working on but the links are missing all of a sudden. I have been experienceing many bugs accross the board and im not sure whats wrong with the program.
