Question

Should I Use Adobe Illustrator

Hi everyone,

I need to make emojis and I am wondering in AI is a way to do so.

I want to make good quality emojis. I need to make batches of 80 images all of one theme. So, they might be related to a particular sport or hobby.

Quite a lot, but not all, of each batch could have a common basic face with different facial expressions and characteristics. For instance, if I did a soccer theme then I could use a soccer ball as the base for a lot of the emojis and then create more emojis using soccer related items like boots, goal posts etc.

I believe that I would need a large set of images, such as eyes, mouths etc, in order to create the emojis. I do not know where to source them. Any images that I use in the creation of the emojis must be legally obtained and be legal to use. Where do I get such images to use with AI?

Is AI the way to do this? How much does it cost? How long is the learning time for me to be able to create emojis as I have described?

All help is gratefully received.

Many thanks,

John

    Thanks, Jet, that's very interesting.

Which would you recommend as being good for the job, not too difficult to learn and a reasonable price, please?

you can't get more reasonable than free.

are you making an income from this? i think that's the only way getting a subscription application would make much sense. if you're not, or that income is prospective, get Inkscape (free) or Affinity ($50 or so).

and if you learn those, you might never need illustrator. unless you start a job that requires it or something.

What you describe is routine. You can do it equally well in any general-purpose vector-based drawing program. ACD Canvas, Corel Draw, open source Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Serif Affinity Designer, Xara Designer Pro...

Many thanks. I'm completely new so I do not know the difference between pixel and vector artwork.

My emojis will all be theme based so they might be a bout a particular sport or hobby. Take golf, for instance. I would need to make a batch of 80 emojis based on golf. I'd have the majority of the emojis based on a golf ball with various facial expressions with some having additional features such as hands, hats, or other accessories, There would also be some emojis based on golfing accessories and expressions. Some of the emojis could also be the classic yellow smiley but with a golfing theme.

Please read about how vector graphics work:

What you want to do is of course possible with Illustrator. And doing emojis is possible. But it all depends on the style you're after.

Rather photorealistic or rather reduced, clean graphical style.

You can do both in Illustrator, but photorealistic would require a lot of practice, experience and time.

    Hey

Illustrator can be a great program for creating emojis.

If you are new to illustrator it will take a little while to get familiar with it and develop an effective workflow.

How long depends on the individual.

How exactly do you want the emojis to look like? You know the difference between pixel and vector artwork?
