Simple Clipping Mask

I am trying to mask a small photo into a simple circle. I've done this a hundred times and all of a sudden when I hit command 7 to make the mask, the photo "disappears". I think it's a setting but I can't figure out how to fix it. I'm using Ill 2023.

Opacity mask settings do not influence clipping masks.

Working properly in 2023 here. I know of no new 'setting', however.

Thank you for checking it out. A week ago I was trying to follow a fast tutorial on Instagram which involved using an opacity mask. I think clicking around in the "transparency mask options" maybe messed up my basic clipping mask function? Maybe my file was just corrupted. Anyways starting over in new file and version 2020 and it's working okay. Thank you for replying!
