Question

Slow performance in Illustrator running on macOS Big Sur

Dear All,

Do you experience the same? Working your regular speed and Illustrator being unable to keep up? Saving takes ages... it is nice to give your nails a manicure in the meantime but that does not get the job done. I am working with Illustrator for over 20 years (yes I am a golden oldie and superfan ;-)) and never experienced any issues before the recent updates.

I am working on a macbook pro 2018 (1 year old), newest macOS Big Sur software, I have a brandnew Wacom Intuos pro...so the speed of my hardware is maxed out....

What can I do to make Illustrator keep up with my workspeed?

Cheers!

Katja

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble you are facing. I would request you to share a few more details along with the ones asked by @Mike_Gondek10189183:

  • The exact version of macOS Big Sur and Illustrator
  • Does Illustrator run slow down while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share that document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System / External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Are you using TimeMachine? If yes, please try disabling it as multiple users have reported that TimeMachine has slowed down some apps while they were working.

Also, please try booting the system into Safe Mode (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/start-safe-boot-mode-mac.html) and check how it works there. If it still runs slowly, you may try the steps shared on this post (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/resolve-slow-performance-and-unexpected-behaviors-in-illustrator/td-p/11561981) and let us know how it goes.

I will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Dear Anshul,

  • The exact version of macOS Big Sur and Illustrator > always the newest version, automatic updates
  • Does Illustrator run slow down while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share that document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link. > it is slow on ALL documents
  • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System / External HDD)? > computer hard disk
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently. > after updating illustrator to the latest version
  • Are you using TimeMachine? If yes, please try disabling it as multiple users have reported that TimeMachine has slowed down some apps while they were working. > I am using a time machine. I only backup my files when I am not working
  • I have a MacBook pro 2018 so my hardware is up to date

What verson AI are you running. AI 2018 runs slow on Big Sur, as AI 2018 was never updated for Big Sur, so that it works at all is luck.

Is your OS & hardware meeting the system requirements
