Smart Properties panel missing weight slider for variable fonts

Hi everyone.

So I have the most up-to-date version of illustrator, running on High Sierra (also up-to-date).

My smart properties panel for fonts does not have a weight slider. If I choose a variable font, I can access all of the different weights through the drop down menu in that panel, but there is no "custom" option that would bring up the slider. I'd love to see the weight changes in real time, rather than go down the drop down menu and select each one.

Thanks,

B.

This is in the Characters panel.

In the properties panel you need to click on the button with the 3 dots to open the Characters panel. There you find the slider for the Variable fonts.

i think the problem is this prominent blog post that seems to show it in Properties:

What You Can Do with Variable Fonts in Illustrator CC | Adobe Blog

whether they're using a prerelease version that included it there or whatever i'm not sure, but it's not there.

That's just a large screen (so the Properties panel has no scrollbar), a dark interface (so you don't see the panels' shadows) and then the Characters panel opened via the 3-dot-button and inside it the Variables slider. There is a Characters panel in that screenshot.
