Smoke effect- envelope distort spacing

I am trying to create a smoke art brush for an illustration. I transform>copy a thin line multiple times, using the pen tool draw a curved line, but when I place the curved line on top of the grouped transformed lines to object>envelope distort>make with top object, the lines are spread out. I have tried changing the spacing when copying the straight lines and that doesn't work. I apologize if this doesn't make much sense. I am still learning the terms and tricks of the adobe world. Thanks in advance.

No. Would that be helpful to do? After copying and grouping the lines together, should I object>expand appearance and then do the envelope distort?

Since the transform is a live effect, your paths might act differently when they are expanded compared to when they are not. It's worth a try. But the bottom line is that envelopes are kind of difficult to control and this gets worse the more irregular their shapes are.

OK, thank you.

The mesh shape will need to be a lot smoother.

And also it might not work with the transform effect.
