Snapping Toggle

Anyone else having this problem?  My snapping randomly toggles itself off (or I deliberately disable it.)  In either case, reenabling snapping does nothing. Even with a snapping menu item checked, objects will not snap, nor do I see any alignment guides.  The only solution I have found is to restart and reset Illustrator, which is kind of a drag.

With alignment guides you refer to the smart guides?

They don't work when the document grid alignment is turned on

Thank you. And yes, the smart guides.  Align to grid is not turned on and, in any event, it should still snap.
