Some Artwork Has Disappeared, Some Elements Moved, When I re-open the file

Hello,

Working on Windows 10, DELL laptop 16GB RAM,  Illustrator CC 23.0

I saved an illustrator document with three versions of a poster in it on 16.04.19 and re-opened it to show someone a couple of days later

and the artwork was still there as expected in the same place.

I closed the document without saving as I always do to preserve the original save properties and when I went to open it today

the third poster version is gone and also a design element that was waiting for inclusion has moved to the other side of the artwork area - to the left of the artboards.

I've searched the local disk folder archive to check that there are no discrepancies in the saved version from the 16.04.19 and it seems that is the only version I have.

SO there is no way that I could have accidentally re-saved it without those last elements in it.

Why has this happened?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there an archive of saved project files from that day so I can go back and retrieve that third poster design from an earlier save, anywhere on this 'cloud'?

I have my preferences set to save 'data recovery' every 2 minutes but that seems to be a 'recovery data for when it crashes' or something - is this right?

When i go to that folder it is empty so there is no saved data there. Where else could I look to find my lost artwork - it took hours and would be very difficult to emulate again.

Thanks for any advice or tips in advance

Dan

It will not help you now, but you can save your files to your local Creative Cloud files directory and the will sync to the CCCloud.

There will automatically be versions made, everytime you save the file and (for a limited time) you can restore older versions in case something goes wrong.

Sync

Browse, search, sync, and manage Adobe Creative Cloud assets

Thanks for the info and links!

Not sure if I can click the 'correct answer' twice or not for both of your answers.

Will check in again tomorrow.

Glad that helped a bit.

No, you cannot mark multiple answers as correct, but you can tag them as Helpful.

How are the posters in the document?

ie Are they linked files or native vector art inside one document?

If they are linked to another file, has the source file moved?

Thanks for getting back to me.

No linked files as far as I can see - I also checked by opening the links panel and there's nothing in there.

I had made the posters from text and vector shapes within AI.

Originally, I had used a template grid which I had made up,

with outline shapes/proportions in it, so that I could use that for spacing etc.

That was originally in 'templates' and have used it many times so far and not had any problems.

So, if I open a new document 'from template' does that mean it's linked somehow?

I'm doing a series of these posters, so every day I open the last finished one up and 'save as' the new one,

so for example, if it was '004 blah blah' ,

next day I'd open it up and 'save as' '005 blah blah' and carry on with the new one in that new document/file.

There is no versioning from Illustrator - you are correct that the data recovery is really "Crash recovery".

Do you have a local backup running on your hard drive or storage drives that you can restore from?

If not, it sucks but it can be a lesson learned and invest in one to prevent further data loss.

Not being condescending, but have you searched your HD for the missing document to see if it was accidentally saved to another location other than where you expected it to be?
