Spacing between artboards

Is there a way to set the spacing between artboards BEFORE extra artboards are added? My artwork usually extends beyond the artboard (ex cropped placed images) so the "rearrange artboards" with "move artwork with artboard" checked results in a total mess.

    In the New File dialog window, press the More Settings button. There's a "Spacing" field in the dialog that opens.
