Question

Stencil tool and Place tool

Has anyone ever tried out the Stencil tool and the Place tool in Illustrator 2019 or 2020?

Do you think they are somehow useful at their current state of implementation?

Thank you, Carlos.  You've clarified the functionality (which is interesting) and at the same time reinforced my impulse to move on without both.

completely agree Doug, I feel I didn't miss anything since they came out a couple of years ago.

Thank you, Carlos.

Guess I eventually have to start using some touch sensitive devices to go for a bumpy ride with the doorlopers.

Most Windows Laptops come with touch screens these days, it comes handy when you want annotate.

Hi Kurt, ok, I have to admit I never paid any attention to the Touch workspace until now. Both the Place and Stencil Tools are functional in the Touch workspace.

The Place Tool has a "Clone Stamp" icon in the Touch workspace, and it does that. It clones the last shape drawn anywhere you click or touch the screen. It doesn't seem to work outside of the Touch workspace.

The Stencil Tool it's just a template to apparently help you draw straight lines or curves alongside the stencil's perimeter as if you had an actual stencil on top of a piece of paper

The 2 red proxy circles move and rotate the ruler around,

So, if we choose the Ruler, we can draw along its sides...

then we can rotate the ruler and keep drawing

....Same thing with Skate Blades, they just work like a French Curve

The Stencil Tool does work outside of the Touch workspace on a Touch Screen device.

Well, Doug. What do they do?

In the desktop versions of Illustrator you can only awake them by assigning keyboard shortcuts to them through the Edit menu.

The Place tool is an appearance of black despair. You get a pencil cursor including a little prohibition sign. You can then draw with it, just to see that you are not drawing at all. You draw nothing. Probably a relief sometimes.

The Stencil tool shines with two vertical "helper" lines and two red triple circles as some basic construction layout. You can draw vertical lines with it, but they are strictly bound to the two vertical guides. You can also draw inside the red circles and then may get some semi rectangular paths.

That's all about them as far as I can see.

If you ask me: Don't care about them. Better look at the blue sky or the stormy ocean.

You never fail to entertain me, Dr. Gold. Thank you for the eminently informed and practical answer. Rest assured, I will waste no time making keyboard shortcuts for obscure tools whose only promise is black despair. Thanks.

Kurt, I was just meandering through the keyboard shortcuts (AI 24.3) and came upon the Stencil and Place tools. I'd never heard of them, I'd never seen them in any menu or toolbox, and I haven't any idea what they do (if in fact there is a "they" and not just an abandoned prototype).

Monika mentions that these are only available for the Touch workspace. Is this why I've never seen the ice skating boot nor the inverted graph icons? What do these two tools do, do you know?

Wonderful image, Ton.

I'm afraid their wearer is just going to slip and tumble unless he can control his balance immediately again.

I learned skating on them, Kurt.

But that may also be the reason why I stopped skating.

Thanks, Doug.

As long as there are no other insights about the Place tool, I look at its tool icon as if it were an old heater in a rotten hotel room in Nottingham where Sleaford Mods perform some unknown things.

I hope that I was not just joking.

I know that the Stencil tool is available for pressure sensitive devices, but was a bit surprised that it can also be activated for non-pressure sensitive devices (by applying a shortcut to the tool).

The Place tool is available as well. One can also wake it up by going to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Tools and apply a shortcut to it. I'm not quite sure what it is supposed to do at the moment, but probably it is just an experimental prototype (?).

I was trying to figure out what the Place tool was in response to a Reddit question a few weeks ago. I can't find it documented anywhere.

There is a Stencil tool in the Touch workspace.

But acutally I was not sure if Kurt Gold was just joking.
