Stretch type (or outlines) vertically without stretching horizontal strokes

I have a logo consisting of five letters 'DEPTH'. I want to stretch the letters vertically - but without stretching the horizontal strokes. For example without stretching the horizontal stroke / bar of the H. (if the horizontal stroke is streched it becomes fatter than the vertical strokes)

Is there an easy way to do this?

Will I have to convert the type to outlines? And then manually select points and just move the points I want to manipulate?

Thanks

That's the only way to go. Convert to outline and pull the anchor points while avoiding horizontal strokes.

Illustrator has not yet supported that kind of intelligent resizing option.

You might encounter problem with curve strokes like P and D. You have to manually reshape the paths and anchor points

Or use a Variable Font where you can change the width.

For non-curve letters or graphics, you might want to learn about Symbols and 9-slice scaling.

It can save you time with similar problems, where you don't want edges or corners to be stretched while scaling.
