I opened Illustrator to work in today and when I went to add a stroke to my text, I noticed that the stroke is now outline all parts of the letters. At first I thought it might be my front, but it turns out it's doing it for several fonts. (See image) The one pictured is Montserrat from Google. It didn't do this earlier in the week, and nothing has changed that I know if. Did I accidentaly toggle a setting I can't find?
All help would be appreiciated.

Well, then we obviously do completely agree on the matter, Brad.
By your saying that they don't have to be designed that way in your second post, I thought that you were actually talking about variable fonts. But you meant static fonts. That was a misunderstanding on my side.
I also did some more research about variable fonts and as far as I can see at least "some" glyphs really have to be built including the overlaps in order to interpolate properly. If such a variable font is converted to a static font, I can of course imagine that sometimes the font creators just miss to remove the overlaps.

As a certain Scottish engineer once said: "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

No doubt, that must have been a sagacious Scot.
Thanks, and have a good night.
