Stroke Outside of Text

I have tried everything I can think of, creating outlines, using the group selection to select only outside path.  Is there any way to prevent the inside of E and O for example from getting stroked?

Correct answer Ton Frederiks

Maybe this explains it better, it is the same, but with an additional fill and stroke:

What do you want to know?

The pathfinder effect "Überlappungsbereich entfernen" should be "Trim" in English. That is the most important part. No further translation is required.

But for your laser cutter you definitely need to "Expand Appearance" in menu: Object.

Hope that helps a little.

I believe I misunderstood you.

Do you want unstroked counters like this example?

I made a graphic style that, when applied to a group, does this.

The background color has to be the same as the fill of the counters.

When the Appearance is expanded (and the text outlined) the fill can be selected (Select > Same > Fill color) and changed.

Does your text have a monochrome background?

I don't know how to make the contour in the "holes" really transparent. But you could automatically mask them with the background colour.

Select yout text with the pointer tool and remove the fill and stroke from your text.

Go to the Appearance panel and add a new fill and stroke.

Change the stroke and fill stacking order by dragging the stroke item below the fill item in the appearance panel.
