It is not clear to me what you are trying to do. Could you please explain step by step what you have done and exactly the result you want? if possible, please include screenshots or sketches.

Thanks,
Peter

I turned a word into a path, then I wanted to put it on the spine. I saw
that it was not working, but I would like to understand what was needed to
enable the tool. Then I discovered that it only works with merged objects.

Thank you for your attention.

I assume you are talking about Blend tool and trying to replace spine for created blend. If it so , you have  to select blended object and new spine (curve, line,, etc) and use   "Replace Spine" from menu.

Please review my youtube video where you can find how to do that. It in my native language but hope would be helpful

I watched all the videos about it, none of them said what was the criteria
needed to enable the tool. I verified that in all of them the selected
objects were merged objects, so I got the answer. It only works with merged
objects.
Thanks.

Without knowing how you have your elements set-up we can't help you.

"I select everything" might be your mistake, we can't know, you should only be selecting the path you want to use as a spine and the existing blend.

Google this, there are a thousand tutorials.

I could force the replace spine function to be inactive when the path is a compound path.

Is that the case? Can you check the nature of your desired spine in the Layers panel?
