Subtracting multiple objects from a shape for transparency in logo

Hey

So I have someone that wanted me to transform 9 designs from psd to vector.   The layers are all flattened, with multiple overlays, and Im having enough trouble tracing and figuring out how to replicate them.  ANYWAYS.  I have a few objects selected that I need to punch out of a simple circle, the "font" is outlined, the lines are outlined, they are all grouped, and I still can't seem to get it to do anything but make everything invisible lol HELP!

Try selecting the waves and use Object>Path>Outline Stroke to turn the paths into filled objects. Then use Monika's method.

Ive done that multiple times and it just deletes everything but the bottom wave

Select all (including the circle) and then use "Subtract" from the pathfinder panel.

    UPDATE

It will let me cut out the letters, just not the waves

Does this have something to do with it being a line and not a "shape"??
