This is a compound path, so actually just one path, not two.

A compound path can only have one stroke color.

Instead of creating this with a compound path, you might:

1. release the compound path

2. Select both paths and color it using live paint instead.

and how do I release the compound path? Nothing the link says to do is working for this example

Object > Compound path > Release

Please do also read some introductory pages in the documentation.

There are settings for the live paint tool that allow you to color strokes. And yes, that is covered in the link. There are also tons of other documentation and tutorials on the feature available.

To make an area in a live paint group invisible: fill it with "None"
