Swirly pattern

I'm trying to create a swirly pattern using small squares. I think it will be a blend. The squares need to follow the curve so they rotate.

I've attached an image.

Any advice most appreciated.

I would try a dashed stroke. Add a width profile to it to vary the width.

Width profiles don't cooperate too well with blends, but can be added after expanding a blend.

or a pattern brush perhaps?

Good try, but it looks so flat,  maybe a 3d program to achieve the twisting

true. maybe play with a blend and Effect > 3D > Rotate
