Teaching cs3 no shape builder - advice for newbie plz

Hello,

I started working at a high school that is stuck on CS3 for various reasons.  They require me to teach it.  I have never worked with illustrator, only photoshop. I have spent money on udemy courses and course books, but of course everything is for modern versions of the program.  Everything always introduces Shape Builder and relies on it heavily for teaching.

Does anyone have any curriculum resources from the stone age?  (circa 2004 when CS3 was around?)

Or does anyone know how I would accomplish the same tasks that shape builder does without that tool?

Thanks!

You can use the live paint bucket tool instead of shapebuilder. In most cases it's better anyway (because you can still edit the base shapes). Has been in the app since version CS2.

In order to prepare for your teaching, try and get a used copy of "Real World Illustrator CS3". Costs a few bucks and is one of the most thorough books available. You will not only learn how to apply the tools, but really understand the application.

There have been minor changes to details, but the base functionality of live paint has been there from the start https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/live-paint-groups.html

JM,

In addition to what Monika said, the Pathfinder tools are also your friends, worth knowing well.

Thank you so much - your post is extremely helpful.  I took your advice and downloaded Real World Illustrator CS3 - it reads exactly as I need it to teach these students.  (and myself....)   Your taking the time to help me has made a massive difference to me.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
