I just found it I get it when I am using a custom brush.

Hi Kurt! I actually just found out which brush is causing this problem.

I copied a pasted a layer from photoshop to illustrator, and created a pattern brush with it.

I guess illustrator didnt like that very much.

Sorry, this is so frustrating. I basically copied and pasted artboard by artboard everything from the problem file into a new illustrator file and the issue went away. I don't know why this keeps happening.
