Text highlighted/filled blue when using gradient tool

Hi,

I'm trying to use the gradient tool on some text which works fine, however, whenever I am adjusting the gradient the text is highlighted blue (the layer colour) until I release the click so I can't see my adjustments until I release the left click. How can I fix this? This only occurs on text but not shapes. I've turned off object highlighting and can't figure it out for the life of me. How to get rid of blue highlight on Text in Illustrator | Adobe Illustrator Tutorial - YouTube I found this video with my exact problem but the solution doesn't fix it for me.

Smart guides are off?

Try and turn off the "Show edges" as well. Don't forget to turn it on again when you're done.

I just had this issue with some text. Try hiding the gradient annotator ( ⌥ + ⌘ = G) under the view menu
