Text outline cutting into shape

I did this design on accident where there is a transparent stroke on the "W"s and the large "D" and want to replicate it, but I do not know how at all. I know it is something to do with offsetting a path but that's about it. Any help is appreciated.

    Andrew,

You may keep the live Type (or create outlines) and (for each Type object) Add New Stroke in the Appearance palette (you may drag it down beneath the letters) and in the Transparency palette set its Opacity to 0, then Group both the (relevant) letters and the circle and still in the Transparency palette tick Knockout Group; this is non destructive so you still have all the original (forms of the) objects.

And you can even edit each Type object freely, and move it about with the Direct Selection Tool.

Some accident if that was how you made it.

Thank you for your kind words, Federico.

Since simple paths (made destructively maybe from copied non destructive artwork) are (at least) preferred by some for certain uses (such as logos for all sorts of formats), both solutions may be fully justified.

    Hi Jacob,

Hats off for such an advanced technique. Elegant and non destructive.

Select the text and convert to (Type>Create) Outlines.

    (optionally) Ungroup

Select the W and Object>Path>Offset Path.

Ungroup the path and the W.

Select the path and the circle below, Pathfinder>Minus Front

There will be an empty space around the W.
