Just would like to ask how can I create something like shown in the attached image in illustrator

Hi,

Start with a square, fill with colour (slightly off-white for example). Create the G-Shape and align to the square, use Pathfinder to minus front. you end with a negative shape. goto effect, stylise and choose drop shadow. change settings until you deemed fit. Lastly create clipping path to hide the drop shadow outside the square.

Thank you very much for the support, but just a couple of things 

you mentioned create a G shape, it cannot be done with any text ?

and drop shadow will be done by selecting square or the letter G? 

I tried it but did not work, sorry I am not illustrator Pro just trying to learn
