Hi,
I am trying to make a logo for a certain band and everything would be great, but I can't make a rim around the whole. The graphics look like this:
When I want to use the Offset Path option for the whole, something like this comes out:
I understand that this is dictated by the shape of the sharp ends of the letters, but is there any option, any chance to do it differently? To get this effect:
There is no way to do it differently automatically.
But you can use that generation as a start and then manipulate it into the shape you want. If you are using the Offset path effect, then you need to expand appearance before you can drag the anchor points around.
Like Monika said, there is no one-click, automatic way to generate the result you want. The Offset Path effect can either give the path corners of one type: either miter (sharp), round or beveled. It's possible to use the default Miter setting, expand the result and then manually edit the points in the path. Illustrator has a feature with the Direct Selection tool that allows sharp corners to be dragged into a rounded shape. But I wouldn't take that approach because the manually edited corners w

Here's what I would do. I would create 2 copies of the new path using the Offset Path effect. One path would have rounded corners and the other would have sharp corners. The two paths can be isolated on their own layers (they can also be isolated within the same layer by locking/hiding other objects). Once the two paths are isolated they can be broken apart into smaller path segments using things like the Scissor Tool. The idea is that you cut away the corners you don't like and keep the ones that do look desireable. The good parts get joined together into one single path.
Astute Graphics has a huge suite of great plugins. They have one called Dynamic Corners. The plugin allows numerical control of the corner radius size. I would definitely use that plugin on a project like this.

Thanks for your replies and expert advice. Looks like I'll have to set aside some more free time and do it manually.
